BBBSLI Overview
Little moments. Big Magic
That's what becoming a Big Brother or a Big Sister is all about. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are, foremost, friends to children. They share everyday activities and experience the joy that simple moments of friendship can bring. Within those little moments lie the big magic that a Big Brother or a Big Sister brings to the life of a young person. You don't have to be young. You don't have to be old. It doesn't take a huge amount of time, or an exceptional skill. It just takes whatever you can give. And gives back more than you could ever imagine!
The children we serve are those that could use additional support or guidance in their lives. In other words a friend or a mentor. Big Brothers and Big Sisters help build self-esteem and improve social skills.
Study results showed that a Big Brother or Big Sister made a real difference. Children who met regularly with their “Bigs” are:
46% less likely to start using illegal drugs
27% less likely to start drinking
52% less likely to skip school
More confident about school work
Have better relationships with their parents and peers
Mentoring provides the additional guidance and support needed to keep a child on the right path toward promise and possibility. Mentoring is about prevention.
