Serving Long Island for Over 30 years

Big Sister Nancy with Little Sister Brianna

Here on Long Island, we provide volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) to children who are in need of an additional positive, caring adult in their lives. These children may have been referred to us by their parents, family members, or even a school guidance counselor, teacher or psychologist. Often times, children who are at-risk are looking for consistency, support and undivided attention, or simply a friend.

Children may be accepted into our program at ages 7 through 16.

Mentoring provides the additional guidance and support needed to keep a child on the right path toward promise and possibility. Mentoring is about prevention, and provides children with the tools to grow and succeed in a consistent, positive environment.

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is simple. It’s sharing time, energy and friendship with a child in need. There is no special expertise required~ and our volunteer mentors often times get back much more than they give!

Study results showed that a Big Brother or Big Sister made a real difference. Children who met regularly with their “Bigs” are:

46% less likely to start using illegal drugs
27% less likely to start drinking
52% less likely to skip school
More confident about school work
Have better relationships with their parents and peers

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of the children who will soon be the future of Long Island. Learn more about volunteering today, or ways in which you can support the agency.
