PLAYING IT SMART-LEVEL I
(Revised and Updated, 2008)
3RD - 5TH GRADE
Early on in life, children are taught several concepts regarding personal safety, i.e., ‘Never talk to strangers’ or ‘Don’t take candy from strangers.’ Not only does the child rarely understand the concept of ‘stranger’, but as the child grows older, many parents do not take safety education to the next level. PLAYING IT SMART- Level I deals with the topics of abduction, lures, and Internet safety.
To engage the children and illustrate key defensive strategies, presenters utilize role-playing scenarios and incorporate a variety of props, much like those used by predators in child abduction cases. Throughout the program, youngsters will be encouraged to participate in group discussions and role-playing activities. The program introduces and emphasizes the importance of:

communication- Cell phones & text messaging

The focus on child abduction is critical because statistics have shown:
- 114,600 attempted abductions of children by non-family members occur each year

Parents and guardians must assume an ever-growing responsibility for the online activities of their children. This workshop will assist them to that end by providing current information and strategies about:

- Filtering software, reporting issues to authorities and contacting resources
- MySpace.com and similar websites---how to protect your child
- Identity theft and
hackers

- 33% of fourth graders report pressure to try drugs or alcohol.
- Less than half of Internet abuses are reported by children to their parents.
- Teenage girls tend to be more pressured than boys.
Topics included in this presentation are:
- signs that your child is being bullied or pressured to participate in illegal/unhealthy activities
- how to help your child stand up to peer pressure
- over-the-counter drugs and prescriptions and the role they play as “gateway drugs”
- steps to take to keep the lines of communication open between you and your child
- steps to take if you find out that your child has become involved in drugs and/or alcohol
- the role technology plays in peer pressure and bullying activities
